glimpse of life through the eyes of a 2 year old

To the best of my recollection, I've never taught Emmett to look for shapes in the clouds. We were driving the other day and Emmett said, "Look Mommy, a horse!" I looked around and saw no horse. "In the clouds Mommy". He then proceeded to tell me about more animals he saw, "a horse, and a rhino and ummmmm a zebra." Now, whenever we drive, he points out cloud animals to me. Sometimes I even see the animal he's describing. I love getting a glimpse of life through the eyes of a 2 year old.

Emmett has been doing a really good job using the bathroom. He went all day with out an accident. He's going both #1 and #2 in the toilet and I'm so proud of him. Today when he asked to use the toilet I was in the middle of putting Eisley to bed so I helped him get his pants off and then went back to tend to Eisley. After Eisely was settled I headed towards the bathroom and heard Emmett's little voice talking up a storm. I thought for a second that Eric was in there with him, but he wasn't. I contemplated that he had answered the phone and was talking with one of his grandparents. I stood there listening for quite some time as he babbled about this blanket and where his poopoo was coming from. It was SO adorable. I ran to grab my camera and quietly snuck towards the bathroom...silence...silence...he was done talking. Bummer! How badly I wanted to catch his little conversation on camera. I asked him, Emmett, "who were you talking to?" He replied, "What do you mean?" (which he says all the time). I said, "You were talking to someone and it was so cute. Who were you talking to?" "I was talking to Emmett!" he answered and pointed to the mirror in front of him. Of course, he was talking to his reflection! For months that mirror has been awkwardly placed right in front of the toilet, for lack of a better place to put it. I don't even notice it anymore, but this little boy sure was enjoying it! I love this kid. It really doesn't get any cuter than this!

That is way too cute! I really had a blast at your house the other night. I can't get over how cute and adorable BOTH of your kids are.

So sweet! Lauren is just starting to talk in phrases (which I don't understand) but I love it. I can't imagine how bummed you were to have missed it on video. Great memories.

I was just reading about "private speech" (speech that is spoken and directed to himself) in toddlers when I read your blog. Feldman, the author of a textbook on development, says that private speech allows children to try out ideas by facilitating thinking and helping them control their behavior. Vygotsky, a Russian developmental psychologist, said that private speech allows children to "solve problems and reflect upon difficulties they encounter." I think it is fascinating that the conversations your overheard occurred while Emmett was working on the "potty training" issue. His problem solving abilities continue to be a strength in his personality. I am so thankful that this bright boy has great parents. I love to watch you interact with him as you draw safe boundaries, while allowing freedom for exploration and discovering. Loved your story today!
